What This Calculator Does

The calculator helps laser owners turn product cost, labor, margin, and optional business costs into clear pricing recommendations.

Calculates real cost

It adds material, packaging, labor, and selected advanced costs to estimate what the item actually costs to make.

Calculates labor

It can calculate labor from hands-on time only, or from machine time plus hands-on time if you turn that option on.

Recommends prices

It shows your real cost, minimum price, recommended price, premium price, estimated profit, and profit margin.

03

Advanced Mode note: Waste, payment fees, fixed fees, finishing, shipping, overhead, manual .99 rounding, and bulk pricing are only used when Advanced Mode is turned on.
06

Labor Cost Calculation

The calculator has an option called Include machine time in labor cost. This controls whether laser runtime should be charged as part of your labor.

Toggle OFF

When the option is off, the calculator charges only for your hands-on work time.

laborMinutes = handsOnMinutes
laborCost = handsOnMinutes / 60 × hourlyRate

Toggle ON

When the option is on, the calculator charges for machine time plus hands-on time.

laborMinutes = machineMinutes + handsOnMinutes
laborCost = (machineMinutes + handsOnMinutes) / 60 × hourlyRate

Why turn it off?

Turn it off if you only want to charge for active work time, not passive laser runtime.

Why turn it on?

Turn it on if laser runtime blocks your production capacity or stops you from using the laser for another paid job.

Simple rule: If the laser job time affects your ability to make money from other jobs, including machine time can create a more realistic price.
07

Real Cost Calculation

Your real cost is the calculator’s estimate of what the product costs before profit.

Simple cost

In Simple Mode, real cost starts with material, packaging, and labor.

realCost = materialCost + packagingCost + laborCost

Advanced cost

In Advanced Mode, the calculator can also include waste, finishing, shipping, overhead, and selected fees.

totalCost = adjustedMaterialCost + laborCost + packagingCost + extras
08

Pricing Recommendation Logic

The calculator turns your real cost into three selling price levels: minimum, recommended, and premium.

ResultMeaning
Minimum priceA lower selling point designed to cover costs with a smaller profit margin.
Recommended priceThe main suggested price based on your selected profit goal.
Premium priceA higher price level for stronger positioning, custom work, better presentation, or higher perceived value.
Estimated profitThe estimated profit after real cost and selected fees, based on the recommended price.
Profit marginThe estimated profit shown as a percentage of the recommended selling price.
Cost breakdownA simple breakdown showing material, labor, packaging, selected extras, fees, and total cost.

Price formula with fees

When fees are included, the calculator considers total cost, fixed fee, percentage fee, and your selected profit margin together.

price = (totalCost + fixedFee) / (1 – feePercent – margin)

If the percentage fee and margin are too high together, the calculator will ask you to lower one of them.

09

Worked Example

This example shows why the machine-time labor option can make a big difference.

Example input

InputValue
Material cost$51
Packaging cost$3
Machine time75 minutes
Hands-on time15 minutes
Hourly rate$15/hr
Toggle OFF

Labor uses hands-on time only.
Labor cost = 15 / 60 × 15 = $3.75
Real cost = 51 + 3 + 3.75 = $57.75

Toggle ON

Labor uses machine time plus hands-on time.
Labor cost = (75 + 15) / 60 × 15 = $22.50
Real cost = 51 + 3 + 22.50 = $76.50

10

How To Choose Good Inputs

The calculator is only as useful as the numbers you enter. Better inputs create more realistic price suggestions.

Use real costs

Enter what the blank, sheet, batch, packaging, finishing supplies, and shipping actually cost you.

Do not undervalue labor

Setup, cleanup, finishing, packing, and customer communication are part of the work.

Include fees when selling online

PayPal, Stripe, Etsy, Shopify, and marketplace fees can quietly reduce profit if they are not included.

Use bulk pricing carefully

A discount can look attractive, but the bulk result should still leave enough profit per item.

11

How To Use The Results

The results are pricing recommendations. Use them as a starting point, then compare them with your product quality and market demand.

ResultHow To Understand It
Real costWhat the item costs you based on material, labor, packaging, and selected extras.
Minimum priceA lower boundary. It is not always the best selling price.
Recommended priceThe main suggested price based on your desired profit margin.
Premium priceUseful for custom work, higher perceived value, better presentation, or stronger demand.
Estimated profitThe expected profit after real cost and selected fees, based on the recommended price.
Cost breakdownShows where the money goes, such as material, labor, packaging, shipping, overhead, and fees.
12

Troubleshooting

If something looks wrong, check these common causes first.

IssueWhat To Check
Price looks too lowCheck labor rate, hands-on time, desired margin, packaging cost, and advanced costs. Also consider turning on machine time in labor cost.
Price looks too highCheck machine time, hands-on time, payment fees, shipping cost, overhead, and profit margin.
Bulk pricing not showingSwitch to Advanced Mode and enable Show bulk pricing.
Currency display needs changingUse the currency selector at the top of the calculator.
Advanced fields not showingSwitch the calculator from Simple Mode to Advanced Mode.
Custom labor field not showingSelect Custom from the hourly labor rate dropdown.
Custom margin field not showingSelect Custom from the desired profit margin options.
Error about negative numbersThe calculator does not accept negative numbers. Use 0 or a positive number.
Error about margin or fees being too highThe calculator cannot calculate a useful price when selected margin and percentage fee are too high together. Lower one of them and calculate again.

FAQ

Quick answers to common calculator questions.

Does the calculator set my product prices automatically?

No. The calculator gives pricing recommendations. You still choose your final selling price.

Can I choose different currencies?

Yes. The calculator includes USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, and AUD display options.

Does changing the currency convert exchange rates?

No. The currency selector changes the displayed symbol. It does not convert exchange rates.

What is the default labor rate?

The default labor rate is $20/hr.

What is the default profit margin?

The default profit margin is 35%.

What happens if I use the sheet or batch cost method?

The calculator divides the full sheet or batch cost by the number of pieces entered.

Does machine time always count as labor?

No. Machine time counts as labor only when the Include machine time in labor cost option is turned on.

Why is hands-on time important?

Setup, handling, finishing, cleaning, and packing are part of the product work. If you ignore them, your price may become too low.

What is the minimum price based on?

The minimum price uses a smaller fixed margin. It gives a lower boundary, not necessarily the best price.

What is the premium price for?

Premium price can be useful for custom work, stronger presentation, higher perceived value, or products with stronger demand.

What does Copy Result do?

It copies a summary with the project name, material type, labor basis, real cost, prices, estimated profit, profit margin, date, and calculator name.

14

Best Practices

Good pricing is not just math. It also depends on production quality, perceived value, presentation, demand, and consistency.

Price from cost first

Start with real material, labor, packaging, and business costs. This helps protect you from selling below a useful profit level.

Do not ignore small costs

Labels, tape, finishing oil, magnets, inserts, and protective packaging can reduce profit when repeated across many orders.

Use Simple and Advanced differently

Use Simple Mode for quick estimates. Use Advanced Mode when selling through platforms, offering free shipping, or creating bulk offers.

Use premium pricing when justified

Custom work, strong presentation, better materials, detailed designs, and ready-to-gift products can support a higher selling price.

Final pricing note: Use the recommended price as a starting point, then compare it with product quality, customer expectations, difficulty, and demand.
